What Is Considered Moonlighting?

In healthcare, "moonlighting" is usually defined as taking on a second job, in addition to your first one.  When seeking out a moonlighting role, it is important to understand the role you will be taking on, as well as the number of hours you are expected to work each week, and if you will be responsible for direct patient care.

When seeking out medical malpractice insurance for a moonlighting role, it is important to understand that positions over 20 hours per week are considered full-time.  Occasionally, some insurance companies will offer additional discounts for less than 10 hours per week.

Wouldn't I Be Covered Under My Full-time Job's Policy?

Short answer:  probably not.  It is very important to note that medical malpractice insurance policies for a full-time job (or another position) will most likely not cover you for a moonlighting role.  Most policies have provisions that only cover the provider for the position and institution named in the policy.  Generally speaking, medical malpractice insurance policies do not simply cover a provider for any and all care they provide across positions.

How Much Does Moonlighting Insurance Cost?

Moonlighting insurance costs vary according to the role you are udertaking, the number of hours you are working, the amount of patient care required, and the state and county in which you conduct business.

The average discount for moonlighting is approximately 40%-60%, depending on the carrier, when compared to the full-time base rates --but of course, it depends on your unique situation.
